How can schools make non-HSC subjects compulsary?

I go to a christian schoola dn am in year 12. Christian studies is compulary and I find it a waste of time. How can they make it compulsary if it isn't a HSC subject? What can I do? I figure my only option is to talk to the school and ask if I can have a study period instead..
